Amazon’s new 6-inch tablet will cost US$50

SEATTLE, WA- Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) According to a report from the Wall Street Journal  the Seattle-based retailer has a new tablet under the works that will set you back only US$50.

Over the course of the last two years Amazon has made tremendous efforts to make a boom into the consumer electronics industry either with a complete revamp of the Kindle Fire tablet line-up or with the utter failure that the Amazon Fire Phone smartphone was.

Are you struggling to recall what the Fire Phone actually was? Well, the Fire Phone was Amazon’s first attempt to make waves into the smartphone market; packing a HD 4.7-inch display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13MP camera, running on Amazon’s Fire OS, whose primary code is entirely based on Google’s Android. To put this into perspective, its initial unlocked price for the 32GB version was slashed from US$649 to US$199.

With that in mind, WSJ reports that due to poor sales figures from its tablet array, Amazon has new plans focusing on a US$50 6-inch tablet that will circulate just in time for this year’s holidays. In order to make something out of a US$50 device, the manufacturing expenses will essentially cost Amazon less than US$8- hence do not expect much in terms of building quality or any other fancy features.

Six inches is a good size for a tablet that is fundamentally aimed to avid e-book readers that also enjoy some light mobile gaming, web browsing that would include checking e-mails and alike. We assume that the best scenario for Amazon’s upcoming tablet includes a poor back camera while the display won’t surpass a 480p resolution.

Regardless, the device will be the perfect fit for the kid’s first tablet, for those under a tight budget or for people who just wish for a device that won’t be a huge loss in case it breaks.
