Samsung Galaxy S8 release date hints 4K display, Snapdragon 830 and enhanced VR

With the launch of the Galaxy Note 7 right around the corner, rumors have started to grow about the successor of Galaxy S7. Internal information from China has suggested that Samsung is working on the Galaxy S8 under the code name Project Dream. With the Galaxy S8, the company is aiming to focus more on Virtual Reality.

The Galaxy S7 successor is presumed to feature a UHD (2160 X 3840) screen. This would hugely improve the VR experience. The Galaxy S7 currently sports a 2560 X 1440 display which is somewhat inadequate for optimized viewing in VR. Samsung already has a significant market share in VR headsets. The company also gave away a free Gear VR headset to customers who purchased the Galaxy S7 during its promotional period.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Rumored Specs: 4K VR, Snapdragon 830

The 4K display of the Samsung Galaxy S8 would need extreme power to run Virtual Reality applications. The VR at 4K resolution scares even modern day computers. NVIDIA and AMD have VR-enabled GPU, but they draw massive powers upwards of 150W, which is unimaginable in handheld smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is presumed to be fuelled by the next generation Snapdragon 830. Although an Exynos variant is also expected, presently there is no information about it. The Snapdragon 830 is expected to be unveiled in early 2017 around which Samsung is also presumed to launch the Galaxy S8.

Qualcomm’s forthcoming Snapdragon 830 is anticipated to bring massive performance improvements with minimum power consumption. The chip will be manufactured by the 10 nanometre FinFET fabrication promising extreme efficiency. The upcoming SoC will feature the brand new Kyro 200 architecture. The graphics shall be handled by an all new Adreno 540 graphics processing unit.

The processor will be capable of recording 4K X 2K videos at 60 frames per second. There will be support for a brand new LPDDR4X RAM. Snapdragon 830 is expected to come with a new X16 base band which will facilitate up to 980 Mb/s download speed.

The upcoming Galaxy S8 will presumably come with an enlarged 5.5-inch display. The larger display size will further increase the VR experience by providing greater field of view. The future smartphone will also feature a USB Type-C port. Samsung is expected to launch a new VR headset the Gear VR 2 with USB Type-C connectivity. The Galaxy S8 is expected to be launched next year in the month of February.
