First Jurassic-Era “Fish Lizard” Fossil Found In India

In a first, a near-entire fossilized skeleton from a Jurassic ichthyosaur – huge aquatic reptile, which lived at the side of dinosaurs which has been revealed in India, as stated by scientists. Fossil report of ichthyosaurs, which stands for ‘fish lizards’ in Greek, has been established in Europe and North American earlier. On the other hand, in the Southern Hemisphere, they have generally been restricted to Australia and South America.

First Jurassic-Era “Fish Lizard” Fossil Found In India

Researchers, consisting of those from University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) in Germany and the University of Delhi have found what they consider to be the primary Jurassic ichthyosaur in India, located at the Kachchh region in Gujarat. The near-entire skeleton, nearly 5.4 meter long, is considered to belong with the Ophthalmosauridae ancestors, which probable lived around 160 and 95 million years ago.

It was established amongst squid-like belemnites and fossils of ammonites, and its tooth wear outlines recommend it predated such tough, sharp animals. “This is a outstanding innovation not only for the reason that it is the primary Jurassic ichthyosaur evidence from India, but also it puts lime light on the advancement and multiplicity of ichthyosaurs during the Indo-Madagascan area of the India’s organic connectivity and ex- Gondwanaland with different other continents in the Jurassic,” as stated by Guntupalli Prasad, from the section of Geology in Delhi. Despite the fact that the research, published in the academic journal PLOS ONE, has not been able to pin down the ichthyosaur’s types, researchers consider that a full recognition could notify on possible ophthalmosaurid dispersion among South America and India.

They expect that finding more Jurassic vertebrates in this area could offer further imminent into the development of aquatic reptiles in this part of the world.
