Palestine removal from Google Maps sparks outrage

In a sudden development, Google has replaced Palestine with Israel on the Google Maps application. This has sparked outrage from several people across the world. Condemning the action taken by Google on July 25, the Palestinian Journalists Forum accused the search engine giant of being part of the Israeli scheme to establish its name as a legitimate state for generations to come. They also had serious reservation about how Palestine was abolished once and for all.

Responding to media, an official spokesperson of the forum revealed that the latest move by Google is designed to falsify history and geography. Moreover, Palestinian people have every right to make claims about their homeland. Google had made a failed attempt to tamper with the long living memory of Palestinians and Arabs in addition to the world.

Change.org petition

To express their anger over tech giant’s move to erase Palestine from Google Maps, a group of activists launched a petition on Change.com. This is to convince Google to reconsider their decision and also to treat the people from Palestine as equal. As of writing this, the petition had got nearly 177,816 signatures.

Started by Zak Martin, the petition states that the omission of Palestine is a serious insult to the people of Palestine. It undermines the hard work of the millions of people who are actively involved in the campaign to secure independence for Palestine from Israeli occupation and oppression.

The petition further discloses that this is an important issue which needs urgent attention since Google Maps are now regarded as a definitive solution by people around the world. The data populated on the Google Maps application are used by journalists and students on a daily basis to carry out research into the Israel-Palestine situation.

With the removal of Palestine from Google Maps, it will be difficult for users to fetch data for their research work, which will lead to serious consequences. By removing Palestine from Google Maps, the California-based search giant is making complicated issues in the Israeli government’s ethnic cleansing of Palestine.

According to tech analysts, Google will likely bring back Palestine to the previous state on the Google Maps after few days. This is to catch public attention about the company.

The Change.org urges people to help them restore Palestine in Google Maps as before. It also prompts to clearly designate and identify the Palestinian territories illegally occupied by Israel.
