NVIDIA launches SHIELD Tablet K1 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop: Price, Specs and Availability details

The American graphics cards giant, NVIDIA, has just announced the replacement of the original SHIELD Tablet, the SHIELD Tablet K1. The former was reportedly facing some severe overheating issues, hence the company ceased production.

The second generation of the series features the same design aesthetics with its predecessor and an identical spec sheet for a lower price tag. So without any further ado, let’s take a closer look at the SHIELD Tablet K1.

Specs and software

The SHIELD Tablet K1 sports an 8-inch IPS LCD capacitive multitouch touchscreen, with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels (~283 ppi pixel density).

Underneath the hood, the tablet is powered by a Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, housing four Cortex-A15 cores, each clocked at 2.2GHz, coupled with a ULP GeForce Kepler (192 cores) GPU and 2GB of RAM. Internal storage capacity is 16GB, expandable via microSD up to 16GB.

Camera wise, the primary sensor, located on the back, shoots at 5-megapixels (2592 х 1944 pixels), featuring autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus, video recording and HDR. The secondary camera, sitting on the front, shoots at 5MP and packs HDR as well.

In terms of connectivity, the SHIELD K1 is equipped with WiFi, Bluetooth v4.0, mini-HDMI, microUSB v2.0 and GPS. Unfortunately, no cellular connectivity or FM Radio are available.

Moreover, NVIDIA has bumped up the device with a whopping 5197 mAh battery capable of running the juice for a fair amount of time.

The SHIELD comes with Google’s Android 5.1.1 Lollipop straight out of the box. Neither parties have disclosed the eligibility of the device to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.

Pricing and availability

As aforementioned, the SHIELD Tablet K1 comes at a significantly lower price tag, setting you back for US$199, available on NVIDIA’s website, Amazon and BestBuy; with more retailers to follow.

As far as accessories go, the SHIELD DirectStylus 2, SHIELD Controller and SHIELD Tablet K1 Cover will cost you $19,99, $59,99 and $39,99 respectively.
