MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA- Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) Google’s September event is right around the corner where the next generation Nexus devices are expected to be unveiled. There are a lot of interesting rumors floating around the web suggesting that we might see something different compared to previous years.
Judging from previous September product releases, the search giant opts for the refresh of the Nexus phone line-up and sometimes for the less popular tablet series. Though, various reports have it that this year Google will go for two Nexus devices, thus catering the needs of a wider range of customers.
When it comes to manufacturing, the most probable candidates are LG -the maker of the beloved Nexus 5- and the fast-growing Chinese-based Huawei, which has just released its new flagship phone, the Mate S, at IFA 2015 in Berlin.
The devices are said to belong to two different form-factors. The first, made by LG, will reportedly have a modestly sized -for today’s standards- 5.2-inch display while the Huawei one will feature a larger 5.7-inch panel, essentially classifying it under the phablet section of the smartphone market.
The LG manufactured handset’s display will come with a 1080p Full HD resolution and not the now-standard 1440p for flagship phones. Though 1080p is sufficient enough for the specific size. Underneath the hood, the device is expected to boast Qualcomm’s hexa-core Snapdragon 808, 3GB of RAM, and a 2700mAh battery. The particular amount of mAh for this screen size is a bit questionable in terms of longevity though there is the potential of seeing a 3,000 instead.
When it comes to the Huawei-manufactured Nexus, its 5.7-inch screen will run on QHD or 2K (2560×1440) resolution which will definitely look stellar to the eyes. Technical specs wise, the phablet will pack a more powerful processor, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 housing eight cores, 3 gigs of memory and 3,000mAh plus battery.
Besides its home region, Huawei is quite popular in the European shelves where it has delivered some great options for low-budget consumers, though there are very few of its handsets available to the US market, hence the partnership with Google could benefit it, as there is the potential of making a name in one of the top smartphone markets as well.
Other cool new features that we will see include a fingerprint scanner embed on the back of the handsets, right below the camera. It is a gimmick that will come nicely with the native support of fingerprint reader hardware on the upcoming Android 6.0 Marshmallow software. Google will also get rid of the old microUSB technology and replace it with the fresh reversible Type-C port that will eventually become a standard to all the flagship phones in the months to follow.
In terms of release and availability, the two devices are expected to be unveiled during the company’s event on September 29th and go on sale via Google’s own Play market right after the wrap-up. Moreover, the phones will be offered unlocked – retailing for around US$400- and compatible with all major US-carriers. Authorized retailers in the US will have the devices available a couple of weeks after release.
The new Nexus phones will make waves to the European and Asian markets sometime between mid-October and early November at the price tag of 350 to 420 euros, unlocked.
