The US-based carbonated soft drink maker, has just launched its first smartphone, the Pepsi Phone P1 and P1S in China, powered by Google’s Android 5.1 Lollipop.
The news regarding Pepsi making a phone hit us in October, where the company itself teased us about the device with a photo shared through its Weibo account. Shenzhen-based Scooby Communication Equipment company will be manufacturing the handsets, while Pepsi is licensing its brand for use of smartphones and accessories only.
The soft drinks giant clarified that it has no intentions of making an advent to the smartphone market, though it is planning to circulate a selection of accessories aimed towards the Chinese market.
The Pepsi Phone P1 features sleek looks and a rather competitive spec sheet, so, without any further ado, let’s take a closer look at the handset.
Specs and software
The Pepsi Phone P1 sports a 5.5-inch 2.5D curved display with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels (Full HD).
Underneath the hood, the smartphone is powered by a MediaTek (MT6592) processor housing eight cores, each clocked at 1.7GHz, coupled with 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 16GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD up to 64GB.
Camera wise, the primary sensor, located on the back, shoots at 13MP, while the secondary one, embed on the front, features 5MP.
In terms of connectivity, the Pepsi Phone P1 is fitted with LTE antennas, Bluetooth v4.0, 3G, GPRS/ EDGE, Micro-USB v2.0, Dual-SIM and GPS (with A-GPS).
In addition to the dual-SIM capability, the handset packs hybrid dual-SIM card slots, with the second slot eligible for either a SIM or microSD card. Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer, Fingerprint Sensor (placed underneath the rear camera) and Gyroscope are included as well.
Furthermore, in order to accommodate the 5.5-inch full HD display, Scooby has incorporated a 3,000mAh battery, which should be fair enough for the given spec sheet.
The Pepsi Phone P1 comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop straight out of the box, skinned with dido OS 6.1. The company has not made any remark yet concerning future updates.
Hardware wise, the phablet measures at 152.2×76.2×7.7mm and weighs 158 grams.
Pricing and availability in China
The smartphone comes in two editions, the Pepsi Phone P1 and P1S. Specs and hardware wise they are identical, though the latter supports FDD-LTE for China Unicom.
Moreover, the P1/P1S is available in Blue, Gold, and Silver colour variants.
As far as availability goes, the handset is currently at crowd-funding stages, with the goal set at $46,9950 and the deadline scheduled for December 3. If the particular score is attained, Pepsi will roll out the phablet for US$200 (CNY 1,276.98) unlocked, with both installments exclusive to the Chinese market.
At the time of writing, early bidders had the chance of grabbing the first Pepsi phone for as low as $78, now followed by $110 and $150 tags, with 1,000 units available each.
